San Juan Capistrano Mission |
Mission San Juan Capistrano has been the home to many people over 230 years of history. Its history consists of memories and stories of its past inhabitants and present visitors. It is a place of historical, cultural, and religious significance, as well as a place of inspiration and education.
It is well known as the gathering place for "The Swallows of Capistrano". The Cliff Swallows begin to arrive in March from their winter home in Argentina. Between March and October they can be seen building nests in the eaves. The swallows start their migration back to Argentina in October.
Guided and audio tours are available.
The mission is located on the Pacific Coast between Los Angeles and San Diego at 26801 Ortega Highway. Phone (949) 234-1300.
Nearby is the historic downtown area with shops and restaurants and other attractions.
When we last visited the mission, the weather was perfect, mostly blue sky.
The buildings and grounds are magnificent and well worth a visit!
